Changing Fractions to Decimals
Change fractions to decimals by dividing the numerator by the
denominator
Example:
1) Change 3/5 to a decimal. 6 . 0 . 3 5 =
2) Change 1/2 to a decimal. 5 . 0 . 1 2 =
3) Change 6/7 to a decimal.
= .857
Since the fraction does not divide evenly, round it to three
decimal places. To round the number to three decimal places,
inspect the number in the fourth place. If it is 5 or greater,
add 1 to the number in the third place and drop all the following
numbers. If the number in the fourth place is less than 5, drop
it and all the following numbers.
Change each Decimal to a Fraction or Mixed Number
Read the decimal word name, write the fraction or mixed number
that has the same name, and reduce if possible.
Example:
1) .5 read: five tenths write:
5/10 reduce: 1/2
2) 2.25 read: two and
twenty-five hundredths write: 2 25/100 reduce:
2 1/4
Change Decimals to Percents
To change decimals to percents, multiply the decimals by 100
and add the percent sign. (Multiplying a number by 100 moves the
decimal point 2 places to the right. Example: 2.5678 x 100 =
256.78)
Example:
Change:
1) .65 to a percent. .65 x 100 = 65%
2) .265 to a percent. .265 x 100 = 26.5%
Change Percents to Decimals and Decimals to Fractions:
To change percents to decimals, divide by 100 and drop the
percent sign. (Dividing a number by 100 moves the decimal point 2
places to the left: Example: 325.22 ÷ 100 = 3.2522.)
Example:
1) 25% = 25 ÷ 100 = .25
.25 = 25/100 = 1/4
2) 135% = 135 ÷ 100 = 1.35
1.35 = 1 35/100 = 1 7/20
